The Process

This form of digging is incredibly straightforward and offers us maximum control. The process includes:

  • Bringing the truck to the site: A hydrovac truck is essentially the workhorse of the hydrovac excavation endeavour. The hydrovac unit is on a trailer or truck, with a high-pressure water hose, a water storage tank, and a soil storage tank. The size of the equipment depends entirely on the needs of the project.
  • Injecting water into the soil: Whether we're daylighting or excavating a trench, we inject the water into the ground using the hose and then a specialized wand for precise direction. When hydro-excavating frozen ground, we will need to use boiling water.
  • Liquifing the soil: Eventually, the water will break down the ground. After some time, the land will become watered down mud, known as slurry.
  • Vacuuming the slurry: When it reaches the desired consistency, the vacuum on the hydro-vac system will suck it up. The hydrovac system will transport the slurry into the storing tank. Generally, there are two types of vacuum options, depending on the project's needs. A fan system works fast but only applies to light-duty excavations. On the other hand, a positive displacement blower works slower but can break up hard soil and dig deeper.
  • Releasing the slurry: We will remove the slurry responsibly after completing the project.

Our hydrovac excavation in Winnipeg can add to any project, from uncovering underground utilities to digging trenches. We also provide sewer line inspections and cleaning.

Applications

We can use hydrovac digging for:

  • Daylighting: Daylighting is the process of digging to expose and locate buried utilities. When performing daylighting, the water we use will not damage the utilities in any way.
  • Soil trenching: Slot trenching involves digging thin holes into the ground to place pipes, posts, and signs cables. Hydrovac excavation can produce superior results as compared to older excavation methods. We can offer hydrovac excavation to dig narrow trenches for installing numerous underground utilities. Using this form of digging only affects the area that requires digging because of the accuracy of hydrovac units.
  • Debris removal: You can use a hydrovac unit to remove debris from a particular area. Traditional equipment might feature heavy machinery, which necessitates more room. In contrast, hydrovac systems have a boom feature that offers incredible maneuverability in height and depth. Hydrovac units can eliminate all types of debris, including rocks and sand.
  • Piling hole excavation: We've mentioned above that hydrovac units offer superior precision in digging. This accuracy allows us to drill holes of numerous diameters and depths to place pilings.
  • Tight spaces: Is your property not large enough to accommodate traditional excavation methods? Our hydrovac system in Winnipeg can navigate these tight spaces to excavate soil for your desired purpose.
  • Cold weather excavation: The low temperatures in this part of the country can cause the ground to freeze up. Cold weather does not affect the ability of our hydro vac systems to perform their job. Using heated water can break down frozen soil for the desired results. This feature is not available in any other excavation method.
  • Excess water drainage: Hydrovac equipment can handle situations with excess water. We can use our machinery to drain large pools of water.

Please get in touch with us to discuss your project's needs. We can also provide you with portable toilet rentals.

Why Should You Choose Hydro-Vac Services?

Hydrovac excavation is a popular alternative to traditional excavation methods. Here are some advantages:

  • Safe and minimally invasive: Hydrovac excavation is the most minimally invasive and safe technique. It does not break or tear down into underground structures while uncovering utilities. Hydrovac excavation also poses minimum risk to passersby, unlike mechanical excavation, which requires the site to be shut off until the work is completed.
  • Higher precision: Hydrovac excavation is performed through a handheld pressurized wand. It allows the professionals to maneuver around tight quarters quickly, efficiently, and effectively. Resulting in lesser dumping of materials and subsequently less spending on restoration.
  • Cold Weather: Even during the winter months, it can penetrate through frozen grounds easily. It requires less manpower as compared to conventional methods.
  • Clean and Organized: Since debris is stored in a container, disposed materials are not left to gather on the road. This avoids traffic disruption and any inconvenience to the public.

Hydro Excavation vs Traditional Methods

Unlike traditional excavation methods, hydro excavation or soft-digging uses high-pressure water and a truck-mounted vacuum to locate underground utilities, including gas and water lines, power cables, telephone cables, and other utility infrastructures. In the cold climate, hydro-vac service is particularly beneficial due to its ability to quickly cut through frozen ground and frost, reducing the chance of damage and costly repairs of mechanical excavating equipment.

Additionally, hydro excavation can be done in critical or hard-to-reach areas with minimal or no destruction to the surrounding environment, wherein traditional methods can damage trees and landscaping. We are happy to assist you, give us a call to let us know about your requirements.

Safety

Compared to other digging methods, hydrovac excavation is safe and reliable. Although it is a low-impact method, it comes with certain risks based on the projects we use it on. For this reason, we adhere to strict safety practices and take the time to identify any potential risks that your project might pose to us. The following are some of the measures we take to enhance safety on the worksite:

  • Location of underground utilities: Your project's infrastructure might contain potentially dangerous underground utilities such as natural gas lines. An awareness of what's under the ground is necessary.
  • Use of proper signage: Proper signage alerts workers of any potential hazards and the need for caution.
  • Worker training: We ensure that our team is up to date with the latest safety protocols and knows how to use equipment safely.
  • Overhead wires: When working on sites, we are particularly cautious in the vicinity of overhead lines, which can be dangerous.
  • Using proper pressure: Our team always uses adequate water pressure to prevent blowing through cable lines.
